Prince of Wales Lodge No. 1705

'Other' Prince of Wales Lodges

We are trying to put together a links page to all of the other Prince of Wales Lodges that we can find or are told about. If you are member of another Lodge with the same name, please contact our webmaster who will provide a link to your Lodge web site (if you have one) or, alternatively, provide outline details about your Lodge - location, constitution, short history etc.
Thanks to any Brother that can help.
All Lodges are English Constitution unless otherwise stated.

We are now up to 30 different 'Prince of Wales' Lodges (including ourselves) following contact with Prince of Wales Lodge No. 19 meeting in Santiago, Chile.

During some reciprocal visits between various Prince of Wales Lodges, it has been suggested that it might be a nice idea if we could arrange some form of get together of representatives of as many Prince of Wales Lodges as possible. We have been in contact with most of the UK based Lodges and have received almost unanimous enthusiasm for this idea.  We continue to try to visit other Prince of Wales Lodges (details here) and we continue to welcome representatives of those Lodges to our own meetings.

All links (just click on the Lodge name where it appears in blue script) on this page are provided for information only. Although U.G.L.E. is in amity with all of the Foreign Grand Lodges of the Lodges named below, this website does not provide these links as any form of recommendation or to suggest any form of Masonic contact which should always be made via the Offices of the Grand Secretary of your own Constitution. Some Lodges change their website addresses from time to time and we cannot always guarantee the accuracy of web links. Please report any broken links to the webmaster.

Please also note that the E.C. Lodges are listed in order of seniority as to when they were originally constituted. Lodges under Foreign Constitutions are simply listed in a general numerical order. If we are able to discover the dates of constitution of each and every one of these Lodges then they will also be listed by seniority.

London

Prince of Wales's Lodge No. 259, London.

The Prince of Wales's Lodge No. 259 (and we should take this opportunity to emphasise that it is the Prince of Wales's Lodge and not the Prince of Wales) was originally Lodge No. 503 and received its warrant on 20th August 1787 from the Most Worshipful Grand Master His Royal Highness The Duke of Cumberland. The Lodge was founded by His Royal Highness George, Prince of Wales, who later became King George IV. It is believed that the foundation arose at the suggestion of Chevalier Ruspini - His Royal Highness's surgeon-dentist who, in the following year, founded The Royal Masonic Institute for Girls.

It was the wish of the Royal founder that he should be surrounded and served by members of the Crown and household, and he therefore established the Lodge with this in mind. Down the years it has continued to have a strong association with the Crown. Indeed when the Prince of Wales became Grand Master, he appointed his two brothers the Dukes of York and Clarence (also members of the Lodge) to the Grand Wardens Chairs. Each in turn became Master of the Lodge, the Duke of Clarence later assuming the throne as King William IV.

It was to commemorate this that the then Most Worshipful Grand Master His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex directed that members of the "Prince of Wales's Lodge" should henceforth wear an edging of garter blue upon their aprons.

Subsequently His Royal Highness Albert Edward, Prince of Wales was Master until his accession as King Edward VII, and subsequently in 1932 His Royal Highness Edward Prince of Wales and His Royal Highness Albert Duke of York became members, later to become King Edward VIII and King George VI respectively.

Coming nearer to our Hampshire home, it is interesting to note that Thomas Dunkerley was a joining member of the Prince of Wales's Lodge in 1788. Lodge 259 is also one of the 19 "Red Collar" Lodges who are privileged to nominate a Grand Steward each year.

The members of the Prince of Wales's Lodge No. 259 remain seated for all toasts except "The Queen and the Craft". This dates from the time when the W.M. was the Grand Master and Prince of Wales, and did not feel that he should rise for any toast other than the Loyal Toast. No replies are permitted to any toasts, even the Inititate's "thank you" being considered far too long.

Stow on the Wold

Prince of Wales Lodge No. 951

We were delighted to be able to welcome three members of Prince of Wales Lodge No. 951 to the 1705 Installation meeting in October 2007. From left to right, W. Bros. Bob Field, Rob Dewbery and Harry Limbrick are shown here after accepting a small personal gift each. We have our own ties with the Prince of Wales Feathers Crest and we were delighted to be able to present each of these travelling Brothers with their own tie. Additionally, we presented one of our specially commissioned Firing Glasses to them and it is now used by their Worshipful Master at their Festive Board. Rob Dewbery is attempting to visit each and every Prince of Wales Lodge under the English Constitution (although he's still not sure about the ones overseas!). As at October 2007, visits have been made to Lodge 4021 (Wolverhampton, Staffordshire) on 22nd February 2007, Lodge 959 (Ipswich, Suffolk) on 2nd April 2007, and ourselves here in Gosport.

We were also absolutely delighted to receive this wonderful gift from the travellers.

It is a hand turned maul which was made by Bob Field and which bears an engraved plaque marking the occasion of their visit. We have resolved to use this beautiful gift (carefully!) at each Festive Board.

Information taken from the Provincial website -

PRINCE OF WALES LODGE No. 222, BRAY

Warrant No. 222 is a number with an interesting and much travelled history being originally granted in 1763 to a Lodge in Dundalk. Following a period of almost 60 years the warrant was cancelled and subsequently re-issued to a Lodge in Barbados, West Indies, in 1822.
Some 25 years later it was again cancelled and returned to the Grand Lodge of Ireland. However, in 1847, it was once again issued, this time to a number of Irish immigrants in Toronto, Canada, who wished to establish a Lodge under the Irish Constitution to be called King Solomon Lodge No. 222. With the eventual formation of the Grand Lodge of Canada, which was constituted in 1855, Warrant No. 222 once again was returned to Ireland. The Warrant lay dormant until 1870 when on the 4th February 1870 that Warrant No. 222 was issued to Thomas North, William N. Vance and Ralph Valentine, to found the Prince of Wales Lodge No. 222, Bray. There is no information available as to how the title of "Prince of Wales" came to be chosen. It is purely coincidental, though of interest, that the Lodge was to meet for a considerable time at Prince of Wales Terrace, Bray.
For the first 52 years of its existence the Lodge regularly met in the Assembly Rooms, Bray. During the period November 1922 to March 1924, because of the emergency conditions prevailing at that time, meetings were held in Freemason’s Hall, Dublin. The Lodge resumed meetings in Bray in April 1924, this time however in an upstairs room of the Bray Men’s Institute, in the Main Street. In 1987, Lodge 222 had to vacate their rooms in Bray, and were kindly offered accommodation in the premises of Emerald Lodge 49, in Greystones.
Lodge 222 has always been proud of its social side, which have been marked with generous hospitality. Ladies nights have been a regular feature as well as a number of other social activities.
The Brethren of Lodge 222 are justly proud of the elevation, in 2001, of one of their members, M.W. Bro. Eric Waller, to the position of Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ireland.
Now in it’s second century the members of 222 can look back with gratitude to many good Masons who have passed through it and who have contributed to the continued progress of the Lodge. They have set a high standard for those in whose hand the welfare of the Lodge now stands. Lodge 222 looks forward to recruiting many young and energetic members in the future and can face the future with confidence.
The Lodge meets, at 8.00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the months of January, March, April, May, September, October, and November, in the Masonic Hall, Hillside Road, Greystones, Co. Wicklow.
Visitor Brethren especially welcome.

Santiago

Prince of Wales Lodge No. 19, Santiago, Chile.
Constitution - Grand Lodge of Chile.
Founded by the Brethren of Harmony Lodge No. 1411, United Grand Lodge of England, District of South America, Southern Division. (This Lodge still meets today in Valparaiso, Chile and is the only E.C. Lodge in Chile - please visit the website of Harmony Lodge at link).
28 Brethren from Harmony Lodge (mostly English) wanted to continue their Masonic work when they moved from Valparaiso to Santiago. They wanted to continue to work the Emulation Ritual in English and that was indeed the case from the foundation of the Lodge in 1926 right up until 1980 when the predominance of Spanish speaking Brethren resulted in the Lodge continuing to work Emulation Ritual - but now in Spanish.
The founding Members had originally wished to form a new Lodge under E.C. but an agreement between U.G.L.E. and the Grand Lodge of Chile (Gran Logia de Chile) meant that every newly constituted Lodge must work under the Charter of the Grand Lodge of Chile.
The first Worshipful Master was W. Bro. William Alfred Cooke.
Prince of Wales Lodge No. 19, Grand Lodge of Chile was constituted on 18th September 1926.
The Lodge meets every Monday from March to September.
Grateful thanks to W. Bro. Leopoldo Rodriguez, the Secretary of Lodge of Harmony No. 1411 for help in providing the above information.
